Uploading your brain to PCs may soon become reality
NEW YORK: Humans may be able to upload their brains to computers by as early as 2045, some futurists believe.
This notion formed the basis for the Global Future 2045 International Congress, a futuristic conference held in New York, last week.
The conference, which is the brainchild of Russian multimillionaire Dmitry Itskov, featured Ray Kurzweil - an inventor, futurist and now director of engineering at Google - who predicted that by 2045, technology will have surpassed human brainpower to create a kind of superintelligence an event known as the singularity.
Other scientists have said that robots will overtake humans by 2100, 'LiveScience' reported.
According to Moore's law, computing power doubles approximately every two years. Several technologies are undergoing similar exponential advances, genetic sequencing to 3D printing, Kurzweil told conference attendees.
By 2045, "based on conservative estimates of the amount of computation you need to functionally simulate a human brain, we'll be able to expand the scope of our intelligence a billion-fold," Kurzweil said.
Substantial achievements have already been made in the field of brain-computer interfaces, or BCIs (also called brain-machine interfaces).
Jose Carmena and Michel Maharbiz, electrical engineers at the University of California, Berkeley, are working to develop state-of-the-art motor BCIs.
These devices consist of pill-size electrode arrays that record neural signals the brain's motor areas, which are then decoded by a computer and used to control a computer cursor or prosthetic limb (such as a robotic arm).
Theodore Berger, a neural engineer at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, is taking BCIs to a new level by developing a memory prosthesis. Berger aims to replace part of the brain's hippocampus, the region that converts short-term memories into long-term ones, with a BCI.
The device records the electrical activity that encodes a simple short-term memory (such as pushing a button) and converts it to a digital signal. That signal is passed into a computerit is mathematically transformed and then fed back into the brain,it gets sealed in as a long-term memory.
Martine Rothblatt - a lawyer, author and entrepreneur, and CEO of biotech company United Therapeutics Corp introduced the concept of "mindclones" - digital versions of humans that can live forever - in the conference.
She described how the mind clones are created a "mindfile," a sort of online repository of our personalities, which she argued humans already have (in the form of Facebook, for example). This mindfile would be run on 'mindware', a kind of software for consciousness.

Google app to trace persons missing in floods
MUMBAI: Search engine giant Google has launched an application "Person Finder" to offer information on missing people in flood-affected areas in the country, including Uttarakhand.
Google Person Finder is a web application that allows individuals to post and search for the status of relatives or friends affected by a disaster, Google said in a blogpost.
"Since last week, the state of Uttarakhand in India has been grappling with severe floods. Given that most of these areas in the state are highly inaccessible with intermittent communication, Google Crisis team bring you the Person Finder," the blog post by Jayanth Mysore, Google APAC Senior Product Manager, said.
The tool can help trace the missing people in flood-affected regions of Uttarakhand and is available in Hindi and English, it added.data entered into Google Person Finder is available to the public and searchable by anyone. The programme also lets press agencies, non-governmental agencies and others contribute to the database and receive updates by using the Person Finder API based on the PFIF open standard.
Flash floods and landslides triggered by the monsoon fury left over 150 dead in calamity-hit Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, while thousands of pilgrims and locals are being rescued various districts, including Rudraprayag and Chamoli.
50,000 people are still said to be stranded in various parts of Uttarakhand that was hit by cloudburst and floods. The calamity has ruined thousands of homes, rest houses and buildings.
The official death toll still stood at 150, but chief minister Vijay Bahuguna said the casualties could run into several hundreds which will be known only when areas become accessible and water recedes.
The state government's disaster mitigation and management centre had in the morning said that the causalities could run into thousands with about 90 dharamshalas (rest houses for pilgrims) swept away in the flash floods.

Flexible TVs coming soon
Flexible TVs coming soon
WASHINGTON: Japanese engineers have unveiled the prototype of a flexible, plasma television that can roll upa window shade.
Japan's Shinoda Plasma Co demonstrated the plasma screen at the Display Week 2013 conference in Vancouver, British Columbia, last month, winning an award for 'Best Prototype at Display Week'.
The company calls its invention a 'Luminous Array Film', or LAFi. Instead of being made one large, flat sheet of glass, the display uses a thousand tiny glass tubes.
Each tube is 1 mm in diameter and a bit more than 3 feet long. The panel can be rolled into a cylinder less than 4 inches across, Fox News reported.
In spite of their tiny size, the tubes are hollow, and can hold the inert gas and phosphors required to make the light to create an image.
Shinoda already makes larger displays it calls SHiPLA based on 2 metre by 1 metre panels, which have been used to create large, curved displays for museums and other public displays.
The company is working on developing a display with even smaller tubes - going 1 mm to just 0.5 mm - which will make it possible to roll up into an even tighter circle.
Shinoda is positioning the product for digital signage at this point, but intends to come out with a version for home entertainment displays.

Hackers try to break into NIC servers
KOLKATA: Cybersecurity breaches have been detected in the servers of National Informatics Centre (NIC), which is responsible for maintaining government websites.
A confidential document circulated by the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS), the apex agency looking into the country's political, economic and energy and strategic security concerns, claims a host of sensitive government emails on NIC's servers were recently "compromised,"including sensitive e-mails involving a defence public sector unit.
It also claimed that a sizeable chunk of these cybersecurity breaches in NIC's servers had "emanated within the country". The NSCS document, which was reviewed by ET, says the compromise of emails on NIC's servers had been unravelled by National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO), the country's technical intelligence-gathering agency under the Prime Minister's Office ( PMO).government officials have e-mail IDs issued by NIC.
Subsequently, NIC officials had sought NTRO guidance on "preventive measures" initiated, which has not been forthcoming, claims the NSCS note. Since NIC provides internet connectivity toministries and its NICNET has institutional linkages with the central government, state governments and Territories, deputy National security advisor Nehchal Sandhu has directed the NTRO, which is now headed by ex-telecom secretary R Chandrasekhar, to inform NIC of "the vulnerability in its system and ways to effectively counter it".
"The affected party (NIC) should be immediately informed of its system being compromised so that the vulnerability can be quantified and effective counter measures taken. NIC, in turn, must ensure efficacy of its counter measures to prevent recurrence," says Sandhu in the internal NSCS communication.

TeCh NeWs Of ThE DaY : Soon, make a face to unlock your Android phone
TeCh NeWs Of ThE DaY
Soon, make a face to unlock your Android phone
Google has filed a patent suggesting users pull a series of faces, like sticking out their tongue or wrinkling their nose, in place of a password to unlock their Android phones or tablets.
Google says requiring specific gestures could prevent the existing Face Unlock facility being fooled by photos, reports BBC News.
The document - which was filed in June 2012 but has only just been published - suggests the software could track a "facial landmark" to confirm a user not only looks like the device's owner but also carries out the right action.
It says examples of the requests that might be made include, a frown, a tongue protrusion, an open-mouth smile, a forehead wrinkle, an eyebrow movement.
It says the check would work by comparing two images taken from a captured video stream of the user's face to see if the difference between them showed the gesture had been made.
The filing also notes several ways the software might check that the device was being shown a real person's face rather than doctored photographs.
These include studying other frames from the captured video stream to check that the person had made a sequence of movements to achieve the commanded gesture, and confirming all of the frames actually showed the person's face.
In addition it says the software could monitor if there were changes in the angle of the person's face to ensure the device was not being shown a still image with a fake gesture animated on top.
Such efforts might help address criticism that its current face detection software is insecure.

TeCh NeWs Of ThE DaY : 3D printing comes to reality
TeCh NeWs Of ThE DaY
3D printing comes to reality
ImageInvisalign, a San Jose company, uses 3D printing to make each mouthful of customized, transparent braces. Mackenzies Chocolates, a confectioner in Santa Cruz, uses a 3D printer to pump out chocolate molds. And earlier this year, Cornell University researchers used a 3D printer, along with injections of a special collagen gel, to create a human-shaped ear.
Once a science-fiction fantasy, three-dimensional printers are popping up everywhere from the desks of home hobbyists to Air Force drone research centers. The machines, generally the size of a microwave oven and costing $400 to more than $500,000, extrude layer upon layer of plastics or other materials, including metal, to create 3D objects with moving parts.
Users are able to make just about anything they like: iPad stands, guitars, jewelry, even guns. But experts warn this cool innovation could soon turn controversial - because of safety concerns but also the potential for the technology to alter economies that rely on manufacturing.
"We believe that 3D printing is fundamentally changing the manufacturing ecosystem in its entirety - how and where products are made and by whom," said Peter Weijmarshausen, CEO of New York-based Shapeways, an online company that makes and sells 3D printed products designed by individuals. Products include a delicate, twig-like egg cup (cost: $8.10) and a lamp that looks like a nuclear mushroom cloud (cost: $1,388.66).
"We're on the verge of the next industrial revolution, no doubt about it," added Dartmouth College business professor Richard D'Aveni. "In 25 years, entire industries are going to disappear. Countries relying on mass manufacturing are going to find themselves with no revenues and no jobs."
On ground, sea or air, when parts break, new ones can be made on the spot, and even the tools to install them can be made, eliminating the need for staging parts in warehouses around the world, said Jeff DeGrange, vice president of Direct Digital Manufacturing at Stratasys Inc., currently the industry leader in a field of about 50 3D printer companies.
"We're going to see innovation happening at a much higher rate, introduction of products at a much higher rate," said DeGrange. "We live in an on-demand world now, and we'll see production schedules are going to be greatly compressed."
Airplane mechanics could print a replacement part on the runway. A dishwasher repairman could make a new gasket in his service truck. A surgeon could print a knee implant custom-designed to fit a patient's body.
But the military, D'Aveni said, is likely to be among the first major users of 3D printers, because of the urgency of warfare.
"Imagine a soldier on a firebase in the mountains of Afghanistan. A squad is attacked by insurgents. The ammunition starts to run out. Is it worth waiting hours and risking the lives of helicopter pilots to drop it near you, or is it worth a more expensive system that can manufacture weapons and ammunition on the spot?" he said.
In the past two years, the U.S. Defense Department has spent more than $2 million on 3D printers, supplies and upkeep, according to federal contract records. Their uses range from medical research to weapons development. In addition, the Obama administration has launched a $30 million pilot program that includes researching how to use 3D printing to build weapons parts.
NASA is also wading into this arena, spending $500,000 in the past two years on 3D printing. Its Lunar Science Institute has published descriptions of how it is exploring the possibility of using the printers to build everything from spacecraft parts while in orbit to a lunar base.
While the U.S. is pursuing the military advantages of 3D printing, it's also dealing with the potential dangers of the technology. On May 9, the State Department ordered a group to take down online blueprints for a 3D printable handgun, and federal lawmakers and some state legislatures are contemplating proposals to restrict posting weapons plans in the future.
Since 2007, when these printers first entered the mainstream marketplace, sales have grown by 7.2 percent each year, according to IBIS World, a company that tracks the industry. Sales are projected to jump from about $1.7 billion in 2011 to $3.7 billion in 2015.
Cliff Waldman, a senior economist at the Manufacturers Alliance for Productivity and Innovation, a group that promotes the role of manufacturing in global economies, said it's still too soon to know exactly what impact this 3D technology could have on more traditional manufacturing. However, he doesn't envision it changing the "fundamental shape" of manufacturing, as others suggest.
"I think 3D has the capacity to impact both products and processes," he said. "I am not ready to say that it is completely disruptive, however. It might be in a few narrow industries."
Starting in June, office supply chain Staples plans to be the first major retailer to supply 3D printers with "the Cube," a plug-in device that uses 16 colors and costs $1,299. And in September the smallest and cheapest 3D printer on the market - a printing pen priced from $50 - is due to start shipping. Similar to a glue gun, the 3Doodler plugs into the wall and is filled with cylinders of plastic that come out of a 518-degree Fahrenheit tip. Once the plastic leaves the pen it cools and hardens.
Makers Peter Dilworth, an inventor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Maxwell Bogue, a toy maker, first pitched their pens earlier this year on a website for startup projects. They sought $30,000 and wound up collecting $2.3 million from more than 26,000 investors, who each got one of the 3D pens. Four artists who teamed up with the men have used the pens to make a mini Eiffel Tower, earrings and butterfly pendants.
