Why Mercedes cars will have QR codes
Mercedes-Benz has decided to stick Quick Response (QR) stickers on its car to allow rescue workers to find the car's schematics and try to save crash victims.
The barcodes of the QR have been designed to help firefighters and paramedics get critical information about the crash victims and save them in the most efficient manner possible.
As reported by the BBC, these codes direct smartphones within seconds to a webpage containing schematics of the vehicle showing how to cut into it and free the passenger.
Till now, if the crash made the vehicle beyond recognition the workers had to call in its registration plate to get the necessary details.
Mercedes would stick one QR code on the inside surface of the fuel tank flap and other on the pillar built between the two doors on the car's other side.
The code will inform about the location of air bags, battery, tanks, electric cables, high-pressure cylinders and other components. If the car is a hybrid model it will also inform about the location of additional batteries and high-voltage cables too.
Prior to Mercedes, Moditech Field Applications and Extraction Zones are among other companies already offering apps providing a range of car schematics aimed at emergency services.
The report further said that Mercedes has waived the right to patent the innovation so that others could use it free of charge. The testing of innovation will begin in 2015.

Soon, IRCTC website to book 7,200 tickets per minute
With the aim of bridging the gap between demand and supply in e-ticketing category, IRCTC spelt out its grand plan to book 7,200 e-tickets per minute in the current fiscal.
Currently, the ticketing site of the IRCTC is able to handle about 1.2 lakh concurrent connections on web servers and can book about 2000 tickets per minute.
In a detailed presentation of its upgrading, IRCTC Managing Director R K Tandon explained the action plan for capacity enhancement to the Railway Minister CP Joshiat a review meeting here.
It would cost about Rs 100 crore to Railways for strengthening the ticketing site.
A power point presentation was made before the Railway Minister about the plan to strengthen the website to enable it for booking 7200 tickets per minute, said a senior Railway Ministry official.
Besides Joshi, Railway Board Chairman Vinay Mittal and CRIS Managing Director Sunil Kumar were also present.
CRIS, the technical arm of railways, is involved in the upgrading of the IRCTC website.
The official said the upgrading of website is a continuous process as an average booking per day has been increased from 3.67 lakh in 2012 to 4.15 lakh now.
There are about 31 crore reserve tickets being booked in a year out of which 55 per cent tickets are sold through windows. While 37 per cent tickets are booked online, eight per cent are being booked by ticketing agents.
Tendering process for upgrading of software and strengthening of hardware is on as per the Rail Budget announcement, said the official.
Former Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal had announced in his Rail Budget 2013-14 that the booking capacity will be enhanced to 7200 tickets per minute with the development of next generation software for the e-ticketing site.
Generally there is a huge load on the website at 10 AM, when booking of Tatkal tickets opens. The booking of ticket varies from time to time based on festival and vacations.

TeCh NeWs Of ThE DaY : Soon, 3D-printed food for astronauts in space

Soon, 3D-printed food for astronauts in space
In a scene right out of Star Trek, a Texas company is developing a 3D food printer for astronauts to create custom meals on the fly.
With support from Nasa, the firm, Systems and Materials Research Corp of Austin, intends to design, build and test a food printer that can work in space.
"This project is to demonstrate we can create and change the nutrition of the food and be able to print it in a low-gravity environment," the company's research director and lead chemist, David Irvin, said. Three-dimensional printers create solid objects by depositing droplets of material one layer at a time.
Systems and Materials intends to create nutritionally rich, aesthetically appealing and tasty synthetic food by combining powdered proteins, starches, fats and flavours with water or oil to produce a wide array of digital recipes. All the ingredients are designed for extremely long shelf-lives , making them suitable for long stays in space.
"The 3D printing system will provide hot and quick food in addition to personalized nutrition, flavor and taste," the company wrote in its proposal to Nasa.
"The biggest advantage of 3D printed food technology will be zero waste, which is essential in long-distance space missions," it added. Ultimately, the company sees food printers as a way to help feed a world population that is estimated to reach 12 billion by the end of the century. The technology may also have implications for the military.
"A 3D-printed food system can reduce military logistics, disposal waste, increase operational efficiency and mission effectiveness especially during wartime," the company said.
"In addition, 3D printed food can provide optimal nutrient to the soldiers depending on their personal needs and level of physical activities." Eventually Irvin sees a day when food printers will play a role in everyday diet and nutrition.
"The initial plan is to work with Nasa and the astronauts and then as things become commercially viable, we will definitely consider weight loss and weight gain" applications, Irvin said. The company's six-month, Small Business Innovation Research study contract, worth up to $125,000, is pending, said Nasa spokesman Allard Beutel.

TeCh NeWs Of ThE DaY : Now, robot takes drink order via smartphone
TeCh NeWs Of ThE DaY
Now, robot takes drink order via smartphone
Scientists have created a cocktail-making robot that can be controlled by smartphones.
Party attendees at the Google I/O Conference in San Francisco last week were invited to send a drink recipe via a smartphone application to a three-armed robot Makr Shakr.
They could then interact with attendees having similar taste to collaboratively design the perfect drink via social media. MIT's Senseable City Lab wanted to see what happened when a lot of people take control of an industrial manufacturing machine.
According to project leader Yaniv Turgeman, the idea is to demonstrate how digital technology has the potential to take the power of factory robots away from big companies and put it into people's hands, CNN reported.
Turgeman said they got the idea in January and set about getting the arms based on the classic factory production-line robot, programmed to slice a lemon, shake a cocktail shaker, pour liquids carefully and so on.
At the party, every time someone created a drink, the recipe went up on a big screen behind the bar and the crowd could see it and add their own changes to the recipe.

TeCh NeWs Of ThE DaY : Soon, your phone will be ‘beamed’ onto your palm
TeCh NeWs Of ThE DaY
Soon, your phone will be ‘beamed’ onto your palm
Researchers are developing a revolutionary new technology that puts the mobile phone on the palm of your hand — literally. Using a special camera that combines high-speed vision and two rotational mirrors, Masatoshi Ishikawa and colleagues at the University of Tokyo have found a way to project a device's display or keyboard onto the palm or any other surface, so that one can operate it remotely at home or office.
The system can detect the movement of a 3D object every two milliseconds, Ishikawa said. The high-speed vision allows the programme to track moving objects, so that users would be free to walk with the phone image on their palm, without the display ever shifting, ABC News reported.
The computer system beams ultrasonic wave emitters, so users actually feels the keyboard pressing against their skin, without anything in their hand. The sensation is simiar to holding a 3 gramme object. "You won't need a keyboard , you won't need to carry a smartphone, or a computer. You can make a call without anything," Ishikawa said.
Ishikawa expects the technology to turn into a reality in a year or two.
The 'palm phone' is the latest in a string of systems that Ishikawa has developed using high-speed vision technology. Last year, the Japanese researcher unveiled a robotic hand designed to win the game rock-paper-scissors 100% of the time.

TeCh NeWs Of ThE DaY : Hacking: A growing threat to Indian IT
TeCh NeWs Of ThE DaY
Hacking: A growing threat to Indian IT
The recent data theft by hackers from two Indian companies processing prepaid cards for several overseas banks, which led to a global fraud of 45 million dollars, has made India's 100 billion dollar IT industry a primary target of spam, phishing and viruses. The security breach has reopened the debate on IT security norms followed by Indian firms and the role played by 'ethical' hackers.
A gang of cyber-criminals operating in 26 countries stole $45 million by hacking their way into a database in the second week of May 2013. Another incident which happened recently is of Rs 2.4 crore heist by cyber criminals who hacked into the Mumbai-based current account of the RPG Group of companies.
There have been many attempts by 'ethical' hackers going rogue, resulting in the breach of cyber security of companies as well as individuals, causing financial loss and damage of reputation. The 45 million dollars heist, the News International phone hacking scandal, Indian hackers' retaliatory attack against Brazilian or Bangladeshi counterparts, etc, leaves the victims defaced and robbed.
Reportedly, a group of anonymous hackers from India hacked and defaced 37 Brazilian websites. The attacks were apparently in retaliation to the April 6 cyberattacks on Indian government websites supposedly by Brazil-based hackers. Although there is a nationalistic tinge to the whole scenario, it could prove disastrous if not monitored and channelised.
Lords of Dharmaraja is also alleged to have hacked and posted a threat by uploading the secret documents, memos, and source code of Symantec's product on Pastebin.
It is indeed tough to define something as diverse as hacking. Is it ethical for any computer expert to infiltrate into another person's websites and e mail accounts? Yes, if it is a trustful 'hacker' who uses his ethics and software expertise to strengthen his employers' security apparatus from the hackers with mal intentions. Also, if done for the cause national security. But, if a computer wizard illegally gains access to someone's computer by pretending to be a bonafide entity for fulfilling a personal agenda, then that is a cause for serious concern.
In India, according to Microsoft, 'ethical' hacking is synonymous with prominent names like Ankit Fadia, Sunny Vaghela, Pranav Mistry, Vivek Ramachandran, Koushik Dutta, Aseem Jakhar and a few more.
Ankit Fadia, a world-renowned 'ethical' Indian hacker, described the cyber security threat as a menace. "Identity theft of Indian IT firms is rather common. Hackers have the potential to damage the reputation of a bonafide IT firm by stealing their identity and engaging in unscrupulous activities under the corporate's garb that can have disastrous consequence and tarnish reputation. In fact, such misdemeanours could go unnoticed for years together if not detected and rectified in time," he said.
There are quite a few ethical hacking groups in India, like the Indian Cyber Army aka Indishell, Team NUTS, Team Gray Hat, Lords of Dharmaraja and the Indian Cyber Devils, that have reportedly been working to safeguards India's cyber space.
An ethical hacking group, on conditions of anonymity, revealed that even while working on a national cause, they may masquerade as an information security company to register domains or create malware in order to protect themselves and get back at their arch-rivals - Information Security and anti-virus companies.
Imparting ethical hacking training is like treading on dangerous grounds, as it raises questions like are these activities justified? Can there be a guarantee that these groups will refrain from crossing the line of mandate? And, is anyone safe in this scenario?
In India, there are a number of training institutes that empower the youth in latest ethical hacking tools & techniques. Institutes like Techdefence, K-Secure CEH, IntelleSecure Network Solutions, Crezone and Kyrion are few of them. However, the most popular certification is CEH (Certified Ethical Hacker) by an American organisation called EC Council, and training material of almost every institute is shaped around its curriculum.
Ethical hacking ensures that the cyber security infrastructure of a private organization as well as government bodies is robust and secure. Although ethical hackers are fast becoming a tribe in India, it is critical to monitor them along with their training institutes. Trainers need to be conscious of imparting this knowledge while setting up the curriculum. Perhaps, it would be prudent for the government to intervene in designing the curriculum and set a minimum age of 18 to shoulder responsibility of such potent knowledge.

TeCh NeWs Of ThE DaY : Make 3D images without camera
TeCh NeWs Of ThE DaY
Make 3D images without camera
Single-pixel power! UK scientists have found a way to make sophisticated 3D images without using the conventional digital cameras. Their system uses simple, cheap detectors which have just a single pixel to sense light instead of the millions of pixels used in the imaging sensors of digital cameras.
The technology developed by researchers from the University of Glasgow's school of physics and astronomy could be used to create much more affordable forms of 3D imaging in the future.
By using detectors capable of sensing frequencies beyond visible light, it could even open new possibilities in other fields including medicine and geography.
"Single-pixel detectors in four different locations are used to detect light from a data projector, which illuminates objects with a rapidly-shifting sequence of black-and-white patterns similar to crossword puzzles," professor Miles Padgett , lead researcher, said.
When more of the white squares of these patterns overlap with the object the intensity of the light reflected back to the detectors is higher. A series of projected patterns and the reflected intensities are used in a computer algorithm to produce a 2D image. Four detectors give images, each of which contain shadows , giving us clues about the 3D shape of the object. Combining the four images using a well-known technique known as 'shape from shade' allows us to create a full 3D image of the object," Padgett said.

LED lights can damage your eyes: Study
The so-called ecofriendly LED lights may cause permanent damage to your eyes, a new research has claimed. The study found that exposure to light-emitting diode (LED) lights can cause irreparable harm to the retina of the human eye.
Once the retina cells are destroyed by prolonged and continuous exposure to LED rays, they cannot be replaced and will not regrow, Think-Spain.com reported.
Researchers said this is caused by the high levels of radiation in the 'blue band' , and is likely to become a global epidemic in the medium term given that computer, mobiles and TV screens, and even traffic and street lights, have been gradually replaced with LED. Experts are calling for the lights to have built-in filters to cut out the blue glare.
Dr Celia Sanchez Ramos, investigator at Madrid's Complutense University, said the retina never regenerates itself once it has become damaged. Ramos said LED lights are made up of rainbow longitude waves, and it is the blue part which causes the problem.

TeCh NeWs Of ThE DaY India has potential to lead mobility, cloud adoption
TeCh NeWs Of ThE DaY
India has potential to lead mobility, cloud adoption
India has the potential to lead the world in the adoption of the Nexus of Forces, the convergence of social interaction, mobility, cloud and information.
The manner in which IT is used, developed and managed will change significantly because of the Nexus of Forces, said IT advisory firm Gartner. These pivotal technologies include the use of media tablets, mobile applications, context-aware computing, the Internet of things, next-generation analytics and in-memory computing (IMC).
"However, for this to occur, new infrastructure will have to replace the old; new types of servers, networks and data centers will have to be rolled out, " said Rakesh Kumar, research vice president at Gartner. "A cash-rich consumer base is required that is able to demand and take advantage of social, mobile and context-aware applications.
Transformation of this nature is expensive and time-consuming. The economic, demographic and social outlook for western economies suggests that, for the next few years, such changes will be difficult to achieve. At first glance, India seems to be well-placed to embrace these changes — it has virtually no legacy systems, billions of dollars are being spent on developing new infrastructure, a wealthy, a well-educated middle class hungry for change, and the country is pivotal in the digital supply chain. Therefore, Gartner analysts said the question of whether India will be the first place to see the emergence of this new computing scenario is important.
"Based on current forecasts, India will become one of the world's biggest consumer economies during the next five years. By 2014, India will have more than 1 billion mobile subscribers. India will see a significant rollout of new IT infrastructure during the next five years in both the public and private sectors," said Kumar.
Given the economic and demographic statistics, the improving levels of literacy and the large consumer base, India should be ideally positioned to take advantage of the Nexus of Forces. Entrepreneurs in region, such as Bangalore and Mumbai, should be able to create products that link these technologies together.
"While there are significant opportunities in India to lead in the Nexus of Forces, contrary forces are also at play. The uptake of social media remains quite low. There is a degree of ambivalence toward the use of social media for marketing by Indian retailers," said Kumar. " Although it's easy to see how social media could grow rapidly during the next few years, privacy concerns and the cultural fabric of the country may suggest otherwise. "If the use of social media does not reach a substantial proportion of that young, affluent consumer base, then the benefits of the Nexus of Forces may not fully materialize," he added.
A second factor is the skepticism toward the cloud. Indian IT users feel that the public cloud remains immature for enterprise use. The major concerns reflect the ones that Gartner sees worldwide -- security, data retention and the maturity of the offerings. One specific issue is the belief that the underlying financial constructs of public cloud services do not add up.
"Many people feel that it would be difficult for public cloud operators to provide enterprise services that are lower than their internal costs. This view reflects the fact that most people still view the public cloud as a software as a service (SaaS) model, rather than infrastructure as a service (IaaS) or the platform as a service (PaaS) model. This carries complex financial and technical permutations in areas such as patch compatibility, testing of new applications and contract management," Kumar added.

Delhi Metro Launches Online Facility To Recharge Smart Cards
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation(DMRC), which handles the operations of Deli’s Metro travel services, has brought an end to woes of thousands of daily passengers by coming up with an online portal for the general public which will help them recharge their already availed smart cards through online transactions by using their debit and credit cards.
“With this new facility, commuters will now be able to top up their smart cards using debit or credit cards. However, recharge using net-banking facility is not available yet,” a DMRC official said.
Commuters using the Metro can recharge or top-up their smart cards by visiting www.delhimetrorail.com and www.dmrcsmartcard.com. ICICI bank has agreed to partner with DMRC to provide online automated fare collection and also integrate is payment mechanisms on the official DMRC website.
As far as formalities are concerned, I think the payment procedure and top-up/recharge process on their website is quite straightforward too. Commuters just need to log on to the DMRC website, type in the amount they wish to recharge and then type out the 11 11 digit Metro card number engraved on the back side of their smart card. They also need to enter their email address. After the user provides the above details, he/she will only have to choose the preferred payment option: debit or credit card.
But this does not end here. After finishing with the online recharge process, commuters will have to validate their particular recharges through the Ticket Reader Cum Add Value Machines, which have been installed at 13 Metro stations, namely Dilshad Garden, Welcome, Shahadara, Seelampur, Shashtri Park, Pragati Maidan, Karkarduma, Nirman Vihar, Laxmi Nagar, Barakhamba, RK Asharam, Jhandewalan and Rajendra Place. The Ticket Reader is a machine which can provide information about a smart card, including total value available, last five entry and exit transactions, etc.
In March this year, DMRC announced it would be launching a mobile app for Delhi Metro, which would provide commuters with fare details, nearest metro stations details etc. and had floated a tender for the same.
Overall, I strongly believe that it is a great move from DMRC’s side and will definitely prove genuinely useful for thousands of people who travel using Delhi metro daily. Additionally, it might be noted that more than 17,000 smart cards are sold from the various metro stations across Delhi-NCR, as per DMRC’s stats. Indians are currently experience a boost of Internet penetration thanks to a number of positive factors and the Internet thrust’ is quite high across the country. DMRC aims to cash in on this growing trend, and I really appreciate them for doing so.

TeCh NeWs Of ThE DaY
Soon, flexible batteries for your gadgets
TV screen that hangs on the wall like a poster or smartphone that can fold up and fit into a pocket are closer to reality because of advances towards development of flexible batteries that could power a new genre of electronics devices.
Those polymer, or plastic, batteries are the topic of the cover story in the current edition of Chemical and Engineering News (C and EN), the weekly newsmagazine of the American Chemical Society, and the world's largest scientific society.
Mitch Jacoby, C and EN senior correspondent, focuses on the latest research that involves organic polymers, which exhibit key properties that are needed for the next generation of batteries.
Those batteries will not just be flexible, but powerful, lightweight and made from inherently safe materials and their uses will extend beyond consumer electronics to include electric vehicles and other transportation applications.
The article published in the Newsmagazine explains that lithium-ion technology likely will continue to be the mainstay, but flammable, liquid electrolytes need a safety upgrade.
Scientists are searching for nonflammable, solid electrolytes to restore lithium batteries' reputation after the recent Boeing 787 Dreamliner safety incidents and other fire-related concerns.
The article indicates they are confident that the obstacles to making flex batteries a reality can be overcome.

Future iPhones may have invisible buttons
Future iPhones may have invisible buttons
While there is a lot of talk about Apple losing its innovative streak after its visionary founder Steve Jobs passed away, the company seems to have a few tricks up its sleeve after all. The maker of the revolutionary iPhone has recently been granted a patent dubbed "disappearing button or slider." Tech grapevine is now abuzz that future iPhone models may have invisible buttons.
According to the patent document, buttons in iPhones as well as other devices featuring this patented technology will remain hidden by default and appear only when needed. These controls will be made using the same material as casing of the device so that they are not visible and will be "selectively backlit through tiny holes." They will also get activated upon sensing heat, sound or motion of fingers along the surface.
This patented technology would work not only on smartphones but also on laptops and gaming consoles.
While this feature may still take sometime to grace Apple devices, media grapevine also suggests that the company is working on a cheaper iPhone that is likely to be unveiled next month. Various companies and analysts, citing supply chain sources, have said that this device will be positioned against Samsung's mid-range Galaxy series. A leaked Apple internal document has revealed that the cheaper iPhone would be priced approximately $300-$400. Also, an alleged leaked image of the cheaper iPhone shows the upcoming device sporting a glossy plastic back.
